Mt. Airy Homeschooling Teen/Tween Co-op 2016-2017 is gearing up for its fourth year of offering programming for older homeschooling students.
We are currently accepting applications to join our Thursday Teen/Tween Co-op program. The Teen/Tween program offers students entering 7th grade and up the structure of secondary classes and another day each week to spend with homeschooling peers.
This year kids who are 12 years old by 9/1 are eligible to join and because we expect a wider range of students ages, MAHC Teen/Tween is planning on offering classes geared towards both middle and high school levels.
The program is offered on Thursdays from 9:30am to 4:00pm at the Unitarian Society of Germantown between September 15, 2016 and June 15, 2017. Each day will consist of three class periods and two breaks. Two science classes will be offered during the first period, Physics for high schoolers and a general science class with introductions to Chemistry and Physics for middle schoolers. Science classes will be 2 hours and 15 minutes long and be offered all year. Second period will offer classes that involve more hands-on learning. These classes will be offered on a 12 week trimester basis and cover such activities as cooking and art. To date, classes are still being finalized.
Third period will consist of two literature classes, one geared toward older and one for younger kids. Both will ask students to read and discuss age appropriate classic and contemporary literature. Writing composition will be part of the curriculum of both classes. Second and third periods will each be approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes long.
In addition to class days, there will be four field trip days planned over the course of the year. It is intended that these days be more social than school. Field trip possibilities include skiing in the Poconos and a day at the beach.
Co-op membership is based on trimesters. A working family membership is $300 per trimester. A non-working or drop-off membership is $540 per trimester. Fees for materials, texts, and activities may also be required.
MAHC Teen/Tween program is a parent run organization. Working memberships ensure that the program runs well and without great cost. Parents can also teach to offset a portion of the Teen/tween program membership fee.
Part-time memberships are also available. A student is part-time if he or she attends either first period science class or both second and third period classes. Taking a first period science class and one of the other two classes offered would require a full-time membership.
